The Secret of Gumbo Grove
11 01 2010How does reading and discussing diverse cultural experiences (Japanese-American, Chinese-American, and African-American) help you understand yourself more?
(Use quotes and examples from books to support your reasoning.
reading these books help me personily because its intersting to see how diffrent and similar diffrent lauangues are from us. Books that have diffrent launguages make me wonder if way down my genitics i have that blodd and my ansestors spoke that launguage. Also they open my world up to languages I’ve never heard of, and hook me to learn and research more about it.
H.O.T Question
Why do you think the author chose the cematary to be in the backyard instead of a regular cemetary?
I think the author chose to put the cematary in the backyard instead of a regular cematary because when the cematary is in the backyard more peple have the tendancy to walk by and look at at the cematary and see what is inside. When the cematary is regular people don’t usually want to look because cemataries arn’t usually that interesting and to most people cemataries are scarry. That is why i think the author chose to make the cematary in the backyard instead of haveing a regular cematary.
H.O.T Question
What do you think would have happened in the story if Raisin and Miss Effie told everyone about the cematary and how Gumbo Dixon was the founder of Gumbo Grove?
I think that if Raisin and Miss Effie told everyone about the cemetery and how Gumbo Dixon was the founder of Gumbo Grove, then the people of Gumbo Grove would probably not think of even wrecking the old cemetery. If the citizens of Gumbo Grove knew that Gumbo Dixon was black, then they would possibly go and clean the cemetery out of respect.
H.O.T Question
How would you feel if you had to keep the record books a secret and not tell any one about them? And how would you keep it from your parents and friends?
I would feel afraid because I would be thinking about it all the time. I would keep the record books hidden in my book case looking like regular books. But, I still think it would be very hard to keep it away from your family and peers.
H.O.T. Question
How do you think the story would change if Raisin told her Mom that she had the books? Explain.
If Raison had told her mother about the books, her mother would have probelly told her to give those books back to the owner, because she thinks Ms Effie stories are crazy and she does not want her back in that grave yard.
My question is that if Raison did not care about the grave yard what would of happened?
I think the story would change a lot if Raisin had told her mother because if she had told, she would’ve been in less trouble than her mother finding it later in the book. If Raisin had told her, her mother would probably at first freak out and then calm down and tell her to hide the books somewhere safe so Miss Aussie couldn’t steal the books, become the Church Leader of Gumbo Grove, and ruin the old cementary with Kin that nobody knew was their’s. If Raisin told her mother about the books, Raisin wouldn’t be able to read the books ever again and she wouldn’t be able to read about all the famous people in the books. She wouldn’t be able to collect everyone in the neighborhood and clean up the cemetary and show everyone how pretty and historical the cemtary is to not cut it down. That’s how the story would change the story if Raisin told her mom that she had the books.
H.O.T. Question
How do you think the sotry would turn out if Raisin had been in the Miss Ebony Pageant instead of Hattie?
I think the story would turn out having Raisin not being able to spend that much time with Ms. Effie. I also think she wouldn’t be able to find out about the man who founded Gumbo Grove. I aslo think Raisin would be maybe a little bit snotty to Hattie, and brag about her getting in the Miss Ebony Pageant.
H.O.T. Question
How would you feel if Big Boy kept on hanging with you and your friend, what would you do, would you tell her to stop? Explain.
I would tell her to stop just because those awful things would probably happen if you hung out with people like Big Boy. I say this for two reasons. First, you could turn into a punk or a bully if you hung out with those kind of people. And nobody wants that. Second, they would just keep on annoying you to do the wrong stuff, like bullying on someone. What would I do? Walk away from her, like all of us have been told throughout out life. In conclusion, it would be quite a pain to keep on spending time with Big Boy.
H.O.T. Question
If Raisin signed up for the pageant, do you think she would’ve had the same kind of adittude Httie did before the pageant
John out peace
If Big Boy kept on hanging with me and my friend I would stay with her since if I told her to stop it she may beat me up or tell on me the next day. I wouldn’t leave until she left because of this. It’s not that I would want to hang out with big boy, it’s just that I didn’t have any other choice.
H.O.T Question
What do you think would have happened to the story if Rasin’s mom had found out about her sneaking out earlier?
I think that if Raisin’s mom had found out that she had been sneeking out earlier than she would have forbidded her to go to ms. effie’s house/cemetary and the story would not have developed as well as it did when her mom found out later.
H.O.T Question
How do you think the story would have developed if Ms. Effie hadn’t told Raisin about Gussie Ann Vereen. Why do you think that
I think that if Ms. Effie hadn’t told Raisin about Gussie Ann Vereen that the story would of had a lot missing. If she hadn,’told Raisin, she wouldn’t have gotten in trouble and you wouldn’t have realized that people don’t want people knowing about all their family history, and the story would not have it;s drama.
H.O.T Question
Why do you think the othor gave most of the young charectors nicknames like big boy and junebug?
I think the author gave the characters in the secret of gumbo grove names like june bug or big boy to show that the story takes place a long time ago and to show they live in a small town. For example, everybody knows each others name.
H.O.T. Question
What skill do think the author uses to write this story? How did it effect the story?
