Should we use a “Sixth Sense”?

18 09 2009

After seeing Patti Maes from MIT discuss her new “Sixth Sense” device that will project computer images onto blank surfaces, do you think there could be a moral dilemma in its use? What if your report card grades could be “projected” on your shirt for others to see? How can this product be used to enhance our humanity? Share your thoughts in our online forum!

I think there could be a moral dilemma. It seems kind of awkward to be able to project personal things about you onto other’s shirts — everyone can read it! I think this can benifit humanity because it allows us to see everything in more detail.

Here’s my HOT question… C:

Do you think there are any downsides to the sixth sense?

19 09 2009
  Dylan (19:08:09) :

Yes, I do think there is some downsides to the sixth sense. What if someone wanted to keep some things private? The sixth sense invention destroys the meaning of ‘privacy’. Then, if you were projecting their personal things onto their shirt, it would be kind of awkward if they suddenly looked down and saw all their personal info. I do think there is some downsides.

Hot q :( :)
What group of people would the sixth sense be most useful for? (elderly, teenage, children, etc…)

  June (10:45:07) :

I kind of agree with Laura, this could be a problem if you are shy with personal info, but I think with a few adjustments (like when you actually want it to project on something) it could be a huge benefit to humanity. It would likely be very popular because it’s such a low price that will probably raise soon.

There are some downsides, like if it doesn’t load that fast, or it doesn’t take a picture when you do the the motion.

My question…

How do you think it keeps it’s power, do you have to recharge it?

20 09 2009
  June (10:48:38) :

oh and I think we definitely should use the sixth sense anyway

20 09 2009
  Alexa (14:19:03) :

I think we should totally use it. It was great It has so many cool features!!
My question:
Can you text on your hand just like dialing?
If you can it would be so awsome!!!

  Emily S. (18:22:54) :

I accidently put my response under the Welcome To Sixth Grade section.

:D

  Lauren (18:42:13) :

I agree with Laura, June, Dylan… that there are some disadvantages to the sixth sense. My response to June’s HOT question… I would think by now the company who invented the sixth sense would design some sort of charging device, in a way like a cell phone charger. As Patti stated in the video, the Sixth Sense would be in a way like the Iphone, Itouch etc. To advance the technology of today, this would be an outstanding device for every age.
HOT Question: On the down side if you display your personal info, or pictures of your family with captions of their names, for example on an airport hallway crowded with visitors, how would that effect your documents and such?

  megan la. (19:35:09) :

My comment… I really liked the idea and it had many awesome activites you can do with the device.

My quistion….. Is it as easy as it looks and do you have to wear those finger caps?

Hi guys,
I’m going to answer Dylan’s question. This is a great question, because it can have many answers. My personal answer is that I think it would be most useful to the elderly. One reason I say this is that sometimes, the elderly need the phone when it is out of reach. For example, if it was an emergency and they couldn’t reach the phone in time, they could use the hand dialing part of the sixth sense. This is one reason why I think the sixth sense is most useful to the elderly.
My H.O.T. question: If you were a parent and your child wanted the sixth sense device, would you give it to them? Why or why not?
Rachel

  Mitchell (07:34:27) :

The sixth sence device could revolutionize technologoy.
If it is still a work in progress, what will it be able to do in 3 years?

21 09 2009
  chloe (13:14:37) :

comment: I think this is an awesome device It has so many cool features:)

question: What type of electricity does it run on? :)

21 09 2009
  hendrik (13:24:21) :

answering laura’s question, i think that there is a huge downside to a sixth sense. you can’t keep things private and what if you don’t have a cell phone. also, the actual sixth sense device is exposed and can get all battered up.

my question is that how would this change the way battles and wars are fought?

21 09 2009
  June (13:26:26) :

srry i answered lauras, dylan’s didn’t show up until monday

21 09 2009
  Jake (13:27:50) :

I think they could probably make the device where you could use it without colored caps and maybye somthing smaller than what they showed you would wear around your neck.

My question: what else do you think this device can do?

21 09 2009
  Andrew W (13:59:49) :

I have to agree that the sixth sense has a downside with the privacy issues. It could be embarrassing, people could see some personal information, and people could make wrong judgments. However, If they can do all of those things in the video they could probably do something to help out with privacy issues like that.

My Question. What would happen if the sixth sense made mistakes often?

21 09 2009
  Davis (14:27:40) :

I think that the sixth sense will be much more evolved in 3 years. The pictures taken would be a lot clearer than the are today.

Question =]
what will the projector be like in 3 years [Big, small, etc].

21 09 2009
  John (14:35:48) :

In 3 years, the sixth sense would probably have more things to use with it (examples: You could play at last 10 different instruments on your body or you can access to the internet and log on to twitter!). It could also have an extension onto the camera to plug in your ipod and choose what music and music artists you want to hear right on your palm!

HOT Q.

When the sixth sense will seek improvment, could it be possible to communicate with animals?

21 09 2009
  Megan la. (15:11:19) :

I’m going to answer Alexa’s question. Well, I would think that if the device could dial and call a number I would probably think it could text too.

21 09 2009
  Karlee :) (15:45:07) :

I think the idea of the sixth sence is a great and useful idea because you can use it for so many different things. I also agree with Laura because i don’t think that it is right for you to show information about the person on them. (they might have something embarrasing about themselves.

I am going to answer Andrew W. Question!!
I think that is the sixth sence startes to make mistaces people will stop buying the product.

My HOT Q. Do you think that this invention will be a success?? :P

21 09 2009
  Karlee :) (15:49:15) :

:0 :) :D :P :O

  Sean (16:39:46) :

I will answer John’s question, probably not, because scientists have barely come up with prototypes for that advancement. But the way science is advancing with this machine, possibly.

Hot Question =D

If the first machine hits the stores and does well, will they possibly have patches every now and again to update it?

21 09 2009
  Andreas (16:51:05) :

I am going to answer Andrew W.’s question. If the sixth sense made mistakes often, then no one would want to purchase it.
Hot ?:Do you think TED would come up with something better than a sixth sense in a few years?

21 09 2009
  Francesca (17:32:53) :

I think that the sixth sense device is an excellent invention but I do think that if the technology keeps increasing, the human race will stop learning as much education. I believe that the part where you can learn more about the person, is smart but it could be humiliating. I wouldn’t be happy if my report card was visible even if it was good or bad.

Question
Do you think that the sixth sense will help the education of young children?

21 09 2009
  jesse M (17:34:10) :

whatzup..

I liked the 6th scent invention, you will always know what time it is because you can draw a watch on your wrist. You will avoid the joke, it is time for you to get a watch.

I wonder if the 6th scent can play a movie on the wall ?

How would the 6th scent affect your social relationships?

Txs. Jess

Hi,

  Andrew K. (18:05:06) :

Hi,
I am going to answer the Ms Litt’s question
Answer: I think you could use a sixth sense if you want to, it is a very cool device but if we are at a stage in technology that we can teel what people are like just by looking at them it is a creepy feeling
Question: What will the more “stillish” version look like

P.S I accidentaly pressed submit comment that is why it said Hi,

21 09 2009
  Jack K. (18:36:13) :

whassup,
Im going to answer Andrew K’s question
Answer: I don’t think the inventors of the sixth sense have thought about the stylish version of it yet. I don’t think they’ll make it more stylish, I think they will program it into a shirt or just make it smaller. They will come up something, and technology is evolving so I don’t think making it more stylish will be a problem
Question: How much might the retail price differ from the price of the finished product in stores :)

21 09 2009
  Matthew (19:37:30) :

Ms. Litt’s question is great and i thought about it for a while. Having personal information about yourself projected publicly would certainly embarrising for a shy or a person who thinks a lot about what people think of them. It would certainly work to make a setting that would allow you to choose what personal information would show and would not show the info unless the other person had a “Sixth Sense” device too.

HotQ:
Would there be apps to download like the Itouch or Iphone if so, what apps could you download to make life easier?

21 09 2009
  Emi M. (19:49:18) :

(responding Francesca) I do not think this device is good for young children to use because they should learn to use their own senses to evaluate objects in life. As they grow older I think it is good to learn to activate new devices around us.

Hot question: If teachers put the six senses devices on a school supply list for a new year do you think it would be helpful for students and staff or an annoyance?

21 09 2009
  Megan S (21:48:50) :

Hi . . .
Comment: My comment is that the sixth sense was extremely facinating because it would be super useful for the elderly (Rachel) Many people around the world would be effected by this product.

Answer:I am going to answer Karlee’s question- I think this invention will be a great success because let’s say you’re waiting in line for your dentist appointment and all the sudden you remember that you have to do your reshearch homework well you could just go up to a blank wall and project up what you need to be searching. Many people will be fasinated in this product also because it is awsome to have a sixth sense.

Hot Question: Like I said in my comment, several people around the world are going to be effected by this product. How do you think the sixth sense will effect the U.S.A. , Your city, and yourself?

22 09 2009
  Dylan (12:10:11) :

for my question i think it would be most useful for the armed forces

23 09 2009
  Alex (08:39:52) :

I think that the 6sence could be used for armed forces because if you are in a situation where you dont know if you cought the bad guy then you take a picture of the person and the 6 sence can find a match of the person and you will then know if you have the right prisoner. Also the 6 sence is lighter than most equitment and is very portable. ALso if you are in a situation where you dont know where you are then you can pull up a map/G.P.S and find your location.

My HOT ?s if you could add anything to the 6 sence then what would you add.

  John (13:57:38) :

Sorry I answered Mitchell’s question, I didn’t see everyone else’s when I typed it out

  Mariah Prosterman (19:55:24) :

I think that the sixth sense, though it has its downsides, would be an extremely helpful invention. It would efect me and my area by making things easier and more convinient. However because of this people might start getting lazy. Kids would be goofing around more also. This could help tuter kids and maybe even improve our econamy.

my hot question is,

How would you use this and what for?

4 10 2009
  Megan Le. (08:12:55) :

I accedentilly put my comment under welcome back, so i just copied and pasted it here.

I think the sixth sense is very useful and helpful anywhere, but anyone could do that on a phone. It would be a little odd wearing that thing around everyday and it would be sort of awkward to have other people knowing everything about you by taking a picture of you. A phone is more portable and it’s a lot more stylish that a video camera, a reg. camera, and a lot of other things that you could easily have on your phone. If I had to pick between a phone and the Sixth Sense, I would definitly pick a phone. (But to have both would be pretty cool too)

Question from Emily S.: How would this be useful to the FBI/Government?
Answer: I think the Sixth Sense would be very helpful to the FBI/Government because if the FBI were suspicious about a person that might be taking illegal drugs or other things, he could just take a picture and check his/her imformation by using the Sixth Sense. Also, they could see what things the suspect buys and look up everything about the product on the Sixth Sense.

Question: Why would the Sixth Sense be a hazard to the person uses the product or to other people?
